In the beginning I wanted to help young people. I had a bad time in high school with bullying and unsympathetic teachers. I left my school with 3 D’s at A level and went to university to study Sociology. I applied to complete my PGCE in Post- Compulsory Education and Training and passed and found out that I had severe dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD that hadn’t been picked up by my teachers in school.
When I became a teacher it was so that I could give teenagers like me, who hated school, a reason to go every day. To love learning and to see it as a way out of their small towns and cities that they inhabited. I wanted to be that teacher that looked dotingly on my class of children and helped every single one of them to achieve what they were destined to achieve.
6 years down the line and even a promotion under my belt my dream is in tatters and I’m thinking about leaving teaching behind.
